Honesty of Materials: Birch Plywood and Steel
B/B grade Baltic birch plywood in 18 mm and 24 mm thicknesses is used according to the structural requirements of each particular piece of furniture. Bright zinc-plated steel appears throughout the furniture as threaded rods, wing nuts, washers, bolts and other structural fixings. The off-set shelving designs are mounted on powder-coated steel brackets.
The materials remain visually legible after assembly. Exposed end grain plywood and steel nuts and bolts are central to the composition, so the mechanics of the furniture contribute directly to its aesthetic.
That construction language extends across different forms without making every object identical. A trestle table, ladder-back chair, bench and wall-mounted shelving system can share materials and connection principles while retaining different component sets, dimensions and functions.
The Making Happens in West Yorkshire
The plywood components are computer numerical control (CNC) cut to order locally before moving through SAVARIND’s workshop process. The furniture is finished by hand with SAVARIND LYRICAL wax, 100% organic furniture formula, the studio’s proprietary plywood finish - two coats applied by hand.
There are two assembly methods according to the structural role of each component. Larger elements such as trestles and seating are fixed together with M16 threaded steel rods with wing nuts, hex nuts and washers, while the prepared plywood components are manufactured with bracketed pin clamps with steel nuts and bolts for self-assembly.
SAVARIND assembles and checks each piece in the workshop before flat-packing it for self-assembly. Detailed instructions accompany the furniture, while relevant shelving and pigeon-hole pieces can also include hanging templates.
Visible Modularity
F is for FRED. 28/84 provides a direct example of how the component idea continues after the workshop. A shelving end-stop which can be positioned in different orientations and works as a corner section, meaning that MONKEY puzzle. 28/84 shelving can be built continuously around four walls to create a larger modular arrangement.
The FRED and MONKEY system began with shelving made for The SAVARIND Concept founder's kitchen. The off-set design mimics a monkey puzzle tree creating a sense of movement, grounded by the lines of the retro powder-coated London brackets. Its component structure can be added to and reconfigured for different spatial requirements.
Skinny ART Table. 45/200, works as a console, desk or dressing table and demonstrates another form of reconfiguration. SAVARIND developed the scaled down version of the larger A is for ART. Tables, combining components drawn from three other furniture designs, including parts identified as TRESTLE. 72, BALDEN. 190 and GERT. 200.
The latest addition to SAVARIND’s collection is the OCTAVE pedestal table. 84/84. Configured from a single skinny ART. trestle with BALDEN. 36 braces and an octagonal plywood top which is referenced as OCTAVE. 84 horizontal component in the specifications. This illustrates real versatility and gives ‘modular’ a concrete meaning within the collection. The claim rests on specific pieces that share, combine or reuse defined components.
