Property owners in Seguin’s Downtown Historic District can now seek financial assistance for exterior building upgrades, as the city began accepting applications for its 'Fix-It' Facade Grant program on October 1, 2026. The program offers a matching grant of up to $10,000 to encourage private investment in preserving the area's historic character. In a significant administrative change for the 2027 fiscal year, the grant is now managed by the City of Seguin’s Historic Preservation Department, having transitioned from the Main Street program.

“Great things are happening in Downtown Seguin, and the City’s Fix-It Façade Grant Program is here to help keep our historic downtown looking its best,” the city announced. The program is structured as a reimbursement, providing a dollar-for-dollar match of up to 50% of the total cost for approved projects, supporting both cosmetic enhancements and essential structural repairs.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for the 'Fix-It' Facade Grant, applicants and their properties must meet several key criteria established by the city. The foremost requirement is location: the property must be situated within the designated Downtown Historic District. This geographical boundary is strict, as the program’s central goal is to enhance the unique character of this specific area.

Applicants must also be in good financial standing with local authorities. Program guidelines require that property owners be current on all payments for city utilities as well as local property taxes to the city, county, and the Seguin Independent School District. This ensures that public grant funds are awarded to property owners who are meeting their existing civic and financial obligations. The city's review process also considers an applicant's history, including the successful completion of any previously funded grant projects.

What Projects Qualify for Funding

The 'Fix-It' grant is exclusively for work performed on the exterior facade of a building. The program supports a broad range of improvements that fall into either cosmetic or structural categories. According to city documents, eligible projects can address fundamental building integrity through repairs or replacements of roofs, doors, windows, and glass storefronts. Work on brick and mortar is also covered.

Aesthetic and historical enhancements are also a key focus. The grant can fund the installation or repair of canopies and awnings, exterior painting, and storefront lighting. Projects that restore a building’s historical appearance, such as the removal of modern slipcover facades, are also eligible. Furthermore, the program supports upgrades that improve public accessibility, including the installation of ADA-compliant access and sidewalk repairs. While requests for signage may be considered, they are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
